Where Does Elemental Iodine Come From? A Look at Global Sourcing

Elemental iodine is primarily sourced from a small number of countries, notably Chile and Japan. This post explains the extraction process and why global iodine sourcing is more concentrated than most raw materials.

Iodine Is Rare on Land

Iodine is one of the less common elements in the Earth's crust. Most of the planet's iodine is dissolved in the oceans at very low concentrations. Commercial production depends on a few places where natural processes have concentrated it, and today almost all of the world's supply comes from two countries.

Chile: Caliche Ore

Chile is the world's largest iodine producer. In the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, there are mineral deposits called caliche. These deposits are rich in nitrates and contain iodine in the form of iodate. Iodine is recovered as a co-product of nitrate mining: the ore is leached with water, and the iodine is extracted from that solution and purified. Japan: Underground Brines

Japan is the second-largest producer. Its iodine comes from ancient underground brines, salty water trapped in rock formations, that are often brought up alongside natural gas. Iodide in the brine is converted to iodine and recovered. The area around Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo is the center of this production.

Other Sources

  • United States: a small amount of iodine is produced from brines in Oklahoma.
  • Other countries: smaller amounts come from brines in places such as Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
  • Seaweed: historically the original source. Iodine was discovered in seaweed ash in 1811, and burned kelp supplied much of the world's iodine in the 1800s. It is now a very minor source.
  • Recycling: some iodine is recovered from industrial processes and reused.

From Raw Iodine to Finished Products

Raw iodine leaves production sites as crude or refined crystals and is purified further for its many uses: medical imaging contrast agents, disinfectants, LCD screens, animal feed, iodized salt and dietary supplements. Supplement-grade materials are typically purchased to meet USP specifications and come with a supplier Certificate of Analysis. See What Does USP Grade Mean?

Why Sourcing Matters

Because supply is concentrated in so few places, sourcing affects consistency and price. Reputable manufacturers buy from qualified suppliers and test materials when they arrive, rather than relying on the supplier's word alone. A brand should be able to tell you where its products are made and how they are tested.

Lugol's Original's iodine products are made in the USA and shipped from Brooklyn, New York, and we publish Certificates of Analysis for them. Interested in iodine itself? We also sell 99.99% pure iodine crystals for laboratory and industrial use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sourcing actually affect quality?
Sourcing can affect consistency and purity, which is part of why third-party testing and clear documentation matter more than marketing claims alone.
