What Does 'USP Grade' Mean on a Supplement Label?

USP grade is a quality designation you'll see on many supplement labels. This post explains what the designation actually verifies and why it matters when comparing liquid iodine products.

What "USP" Stands For

USP is the United States Pharmacopeia, a nonprofit scientific organization founded in 1820. It publishes public standards for medicines, dietary supplements and food ingredients. Those standards are collected in two main references, the United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary, usually published together as the USP–NF.

A USP monograph for a substance spells out what that substance is and how to test it: identity, strength, purity limits for contaminants, and the analytical methods labs should use to check each one.

What "USP Grade" Means

When an ingredient is described as "USP grade," it means that raw material meets the specifications in its USP monograph. For example, a potassium iodide labeled USP grade should meet USP's requirements for identity, assay (how pure it is) and limits on specific impurities.

USP grade sits alongside other common grades of chemicals:

  • USP / pharmaceutical grade: meets USP monograph standards for use in medicines and supplements.
  • Food grade (FCC): meets Food Chemicals Codex standards for use in food.
  • ACS / reagent grade: high purity for laboratory analysis.
  • Technical or industrial grade: for industrial use; not intended for products people eat or drink.

"USP Grade" vs. "USP Verified"

These two phrases are easy to confuse:

  • "USP grade" describes an ingredient meeting USP standards. It is usually supported by the supplier's Certificate of Analysis for that raw material.
  • "USP Verified" is a separate, voluntary program in which USP itself audits a finished supplement product and its manufacturing. Products that pass can carry the USP Verified mark.

A product can use USP-grade ingredients without carrying the USP Verified mark. Both are worth understanding when reading a label.

What USP Grade Doesn't Tell You

USP grade speaks to ingredient quality. It doesn't guarantee how a finished product was made, how it was stored or whether the final concentration matches the label. Those are questions for the manufacturer's own quality control and finished-product testing.

How to Check a Product

  • Look for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the finished product. Our guide explains how to read a COA.
  • Check that the Supplement Facts panel lists a clear amount of iodine per serving. See How to Read a Supplement Facts Panel.
  • Ask the brand how it tests its products. A good brand can answer that question plainly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I talk to a doctor before starting?
Yes. Anyone considering a new supplement — especially one involving iodine — should check in with a healthcare provider first, particularly if pregnant, nursing, or managing a thyroid condition or thyroid medication.

How does grade relate to the dose I actually take?
Grade is about ingredient quality, not dosing — see How to Take Lugol's Solution: Dosing, Dilution, and Timing for the dosing side.
