A trusted formula deserves to be treated right. A few simple storage habits are all it takes to keep your Lugol's Solution at full strength from the first drop to the last.
Store Lugol's Solution in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed, away from direct sunlight and heat. That's why it comes in an amber glass bottle — light and heat are the two things that can affect iodine's potency over time, and the right storage habits keep your solution performing exactly as it should.
Always tighten the cap fully after each use to limit air exposure.
A cabinet or drawer away from direct sunlight and heat sources (like near a stove) is ideal — the amber glass bottle is already doing half the work for you.
A bottle you're using regularly as part of a daily routine rarely sits around long enough for storage to be a concern in the first place.
Iodine itself is an element, so it doesn't "go bad" the way food does. But an iodine solution can slowly lose strength over time, mainly when iodine escapes as vapor or reacts under light and heat. Lugol's iodine is one of the more stable iodine preparations because potassium iodide holds the iodine in solution (see Potassium Iodide as a Stabilizer). Even so, every bottle carries a best-by or expiration date, and that date assumes reasonable storage. Use the product by that date and follow the storage directions on the label.
If you're unsure, contact the manufacturer with the lot number from your bottle.
Keep the dropper inside the capped bottle between uses, wipe the tip clean and never rinse it with water before putting it back, since that can dilute the solution. If the glass chips or the bulb cracks, use a replacement glass dropper. For more on why packaging matters, see Why Amber Glass Bottles Matter.
Amber glass blocks light, which helps protect the solution's potency over time — it's a proven, trusted packaging choice for exactly this reason.
A cool, dark cabinet or drawer, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Every bottle has a best-by date, and like any quality supplement it's best used within a reasonable timeframe from opening — a great reason to build it into a consistent daily routine, covered in our guide to building an iodine routine.
Refrigeration isn't usually necessary. Room temperature in a dark cabinet is fine unless the label says otherwise.
