The Basics of Serving Size Customization With Liquid Supplements

One advantage of a dropper-based product is serving flexibility. We explain, in general terms, how liquid formats allow more granular serving adjustment than fixed-dose formats.

Fixed Doses vs. Adjustable Servings

Tablets and capsules come in fixed amounts. If a tablet contains a set amount of a nutrient, the only ways to change it are to split the tablet, take more than one or switch to a different product. Liquid supplements work differently. The serving is measured in drops, and each drop is a small, fairly consistent unit, so the amount can be adjusted in small steps.

Two Ways to Adjust a Liquid Serving

  • Number of drops: adding or removing one drop changes the serving by a small, predictable amount.
  • Strength: many liquid iodine products come in several concentrations. A lower strength makes each drop a smaller step; a higher strength means fewer drops for the same amount.

Together, these give a much finer range of options than fixed-dose formats. See Comparing Iodine Concentrations: A Side-by-Side Drop Chart.

Why People Value Flexibility

  • Starting gradually: some people prefer to begin with a small serving.
  • Following professional guidance: a healthcare provider may suggest a specific amount, and drops make it easier to match.
  • Accounting for diet: people who already get iodine from seafood, dairy or iodized salt may want a smaller supplemental amount.
  • Sharing a bottle: household members can use the same product at different servings.

Measuring Accurately

Flexibility only helps if the measurement is consistent:

  • Use the dropper that came with the bottle; drop size can vary between droppers.
  • Hold the dropper straight up and down and squeeze slowly.
  • Count drops into a glass of water or juice rather than directly into the mouth.
  • Keep the bottle at room temperature so the liquid behaves consistently.

The Limits of Flexibility

Being able to adjust a serving doesn't mean more is better. Iodine has a Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 1,100 micrograms per day for adults, set by the National Academies. Any change to how much someone takes should follow the product label and be discussed with a healthcare provider, especially during pregnancy, while breastfeeding or when taking thyroid medication.

Keeping Track

A simple habit helps: note the strength and number of drops, and keep them the same each day unless there's a reason to change. If you switch strengths, use a drop chart to keep the amount consistent. Our guide to building an iodine routine has more tips.

Our Lugol's Solution comes in six strengths, from 2% to 20%, in amber glass bottles with glass droppers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lower strength safer than a higher strength?
Strength only describes concentration. What matters is the total amount taken. A lower strength simply makes it easier to make small changes.

Should I talk to a doctor before starting?
Yes. Anyone considering a new supplement — especially one involving iodine — should check in with a healthcare provider first, particularly if pregnant, nursing, or managing a thyroid condition or thyroid medication.

How do I actually dial in a granular dose day to day?
