Nascent Iodine ads promise a "gentler" form of iodine. Lugol's Solution has a 200-year track record. Both have earned their place — here's how to know which fits you.
Nascent Iodine is an ionic, single-compound form of iodine favored for gentle, low-dose use, typically taken in single-digit drop counts. Lugol's Solution combines iodine and potassium iodide and is the time-tested standard for precise, measured servings.

Lugol's Solution has a documented origin: French physician Jean Lugol published it in 1829 as a way to keep iodine dissolved in water by pairing it with potassium iodide. It has appeared in pharmacy references ever since. See The History of Lugol's Iodine.
"Nascent iodine" is a much newer product category. The word "nascent" comes from older chemistry, where it described an element in a supposedly freshly formed, extra-reactive state. Modern chemistry no longer uses the idea, so today the term works as a product name rather than a measurable chemical form. See Nascent Iodine 101.
This is where most people notice the biggest difference. Lugol's Solution is water-based, deep amber-brown and has a strong, metallic taste, so it's usually diluted in a full glass of water or juice. Nascent iodine products are usually glycerin-based, which makes them milder and slightly sweet. People who find the taste of Lugol's hard to get used to often prefer nascent iodine. See Why Some Iodine Drops Use Glycerin.
Both come in a range of percentages, but a given percentage doesn't mean the same iodine per drop across the two product types. Always compare the amount of iodine per serving on each product's Supplement Facts panel rather than the percentage alone. See How to Read a Supplement Facts Panel. Our Lugol's Solution comes in six strengths from 2% to 20%; our nascent iodine comes in 2%, 5%, 10% and 20%.

Nascent Iodine is marketed on this claim, but both forms deliver iodine your body uses the same way. The better choice usually comes down to your preferred dosing style.
Most people pick one primary formula to keep total daily intake easy to track and build a confident, consistent routine around.
Lugol's Solution generally delivers more iodine per bottle at a lower cost per mg, making it a popular choice for people building a consistent daily habit.
